Cultivar Review 2007

This page contains a brief assessment of the performance of some of the cultivars I grew during 2007. Click here to view the Journal for 2007, showing dates of key events for each cultivar.

Lorna Wood
A pure white, hard petalled medium incurved. Performed quite well again this year. Grown in 10 inch clay pots
Verdict: keep

Joyce Frieda
Delighted by the results with this cultivar, grown in plastic pots, high percentage of showable blooms. Definitely one to keep hold of.
Verdict: Keep

Cornetto
Easy to grow yellow medium intermediate. Didn't performed well this year, the wet season may not have helped. Grown in 9 inch plastic pots
Verdict: Not sure

Woolley Globe
Pure white intermediate, a bit loose for some tastes but one that I enjoy growing. No problems to speak of. Grown in the greenhouse bed this year, flowered for the later shows, very tall.
Verdict: Keep

Carlene Welby
Good purple medium intermediate. Good size and very consistent for show purposes. Grown in pots this year.
Verdict: Keep.

Millennium
A light yellow medium intermediate, performed well again this year. One of the most popular medium intermediates around at the moment.
Verdict: Keep

John Wingfield
One of the best medium reflexed cultivars I have grown - outstanding once again. The pick of the Wingfield family with me this year.
Verdict: Keep.

Yellow John Wingfield
A bit smaller than the parent but still worth it's place.
Verdict: Keep.

Pink John Wingfield
A good pink sport from John Wingfield. Fair blooms again this year.
Verdict: Keep.

Peach John Wingfield
Good colour but slightly smaller than the rest of the family. Did not show many blooms, always seemed to be something better available. Will be a casualty in the plan to reduce the number of reflexed cultivars in 2008.
Verdict: Discard.

Candy John Wingfield
Good colour , clearly distinct from Pink.  Did not show many blooms, always seemed to be something better available. Will be a casualty in the plan to reduce the number of reflexed cultivars in 2008.
Verdict: Discard.

Honey John Wingfield
Good colour , clearly distinct from other sports.  Did not show many blooms, always seemed to be something better available. Will be a casualty in the plan to reduce the number of reflexed cultivars in 2008.
Verdict: Discard.

Salmon John Wingfield
Good colour, lots of blooms shown this year..
Verdict: Keep.

Chempak Rose
October classified medium reflexed. Fine upright grower with deep pink blooms. Fabulous colour and a high percentage of exhibition standard blooms. Flowered early this year giving blooms from late August onwards.
Verdict: Keep.

Purple Chempak Rose
October classified medium reflexed. Fine upright grower with deep purple blooms. Fabulous colour and a high percentage of exhibition standard blooms.
Verdict: Keep

Red Chempak Rose
Fine upright grower with deep red blooms. Fabulous colour,  good percentage of exhibition standard blooms, appears to flower slightly earlier than the parent and the purple sport.
Verdict: Keep

Billy Bell
Delighted by the results with this cultivar, Definitely one to keep hold of.
Verdict: Keep

Yellow Billy Bell
Unsure about this one, big enough but form is not as good as the parent. Colour is fine so worth another try in 2008.
Verdict: Keep

Lynn Johnson
Delighted by the results with this cultivar, Definitely one to keep hold of.
Verdict: Keep

Primrose Chessington
Good results with this cultivar, Definitely one to keep hold of.
Verdict: Keep
