message contents:   Hi Paul With regards to judging Reflex's. Back in the 1980's we had one called Joyce Stevenson 24b R that would sometimes come like a Wingfield. We never had problems with that as exhibitors or judges. It would seem to me that if you are a Judge then you must abide by ALL THE RULES and not just the ones you want to. The trouble is it has always gone on by people who think they know better. You are quite right in wanting to have the rules made clear and your examples MUST BE TAKEN ON BOARD BY THE NCS. We want to encourage more people to SHOW and NEED THE WINGFIELD FAMILY on the SHOWBENCH. So I call on our Chairman and his Show Committee to PUT THINGS RIGHT NOW. My record as a JUDGE is second to none and speaks for it's self. Regards John Lawrie.

message contents:   Subject: Judging Rules for Reflexed Hi Paul, I have to disagree with Andy on this one; this variety is most likely the most widely grown in the UK, to lose this because it has a natural tendency to form a triangular shape would be foolish. Grown well it falls within the range that you show as modern day form and should be accepted, Yes the rules should be changed to account for current form variants but the key to me is that judges should have the knowledge of what is the optimum for the variety and down point accordingly. If the form is not acceptable it should not be registered.

message contents:   Paul Basically if growers can't get John Wingfield to be the shape of the left hand bloom in your series, they should be penalised for form and size. The more you more to the right in the series the heavier the deductions should be. Other varieties are available which do come this shape. Grow them instead!

message contents:   Paul. I would much prefer to let my blooms develop untill the centres are smaller because I get bigger blooms with more depth to them. Unfortunatly with Wingfields it does tend to make them triangular. As a judge you would have to balance the lack of size, Depth, and young centres against the triangular shape. My personal oppinion is that it is always more dificult to get flowers fully developed and still fresh at the bottom, therefore these are the ones I prefer.

message contents:   Hi Paul, Have enjoyed visiting your website, keep it up. One suggestion I do have ,involves a great deal of work though, would be to list rooting and stopping date for more recent cultivars,it would help the less experienced growers to get their timing right. Thanks for visit

message contents:   Just to say Paul how well the site is looking after the update in December last year. It is also invaluable to some of the novices in my area, who have said to me that they have found the cultural pages so easy to understand to what they have read in most NCS publications. I personally believe that this could be another way forward in encouraging new growers into our hobby, We certainley need them! well done paul. Darran.
