Northern Group Late Show 2009
report and pictures by Peter Fawcett

Peter Fawcett at Northern Group Late show 2008

The Northern Group Late Show was held at Markham Grange Nurseries and Garden Centre on 20th-22nd November 2009.

The first thing I would like to say it was one of the most successful shows held with entries only marginally down on last years record high of 500 vases. Which shows the skill of the growers who managed to get quality flowers this late in a relatively early season .

Ron Mayo was 'cock of the rock' , not only did he win the Shell Carrington trophy for five vases of incurves with White ; Yellow ; Salmon ; Peach , with his Fairweather it’s self taking the best vase of incurves and best vase in show Not only that  , Ron was rather shocked to be awarded the Bentley for the best exhibit in the show .

This is the first time since the early 1990’s since incurves have taken the Bentley .

You will find pictures of most of the exhibits mentioned here on the main Northern Group Late Show page. Link below

Jack Newton was also successful coming 1st in the nine section one class

Ian Moss ( Everton ) was 1st in the twelve section two class, Ian also won the class for nine section two blooms, and also had best section two and or one with cultivar  'Keith Luxford'

The late Sheila Johnston, one of the finest growers of modern times, grew six section two blooms which took first prize . Sheila will always be remembered with affection by her fellow gardeners. Sheila's blooms were staged by partner Gillie Smith.

John Nevill of Burntwood , Staffordshire won the 3 vases with his own raisings 2 Autumnal and Trident to complete a good year for him

John Nevill brought along a new seedling 'Burnside', see picture above.

Another John Nevill seedling 'Millie Mathews' was on display. Released through John Peace Chrysanthemums for 2010. See picture on the left.

.

Highlight of the show was Ron Mayo’s spectacular Shell Carrington winning 5 vases of incurves , Fairweather with it’s White ,Yellow , Salmon and Peach sports. See picture below. Along with Ron’s best vase of incurves and best overall vase in show, it was certainly a show to remember.
