Lifting and
Boxing stools (see October jobs filmstrip)
All marked stools are dug up and prepared for the winter - this means
removing all green growth and shaking off as much soil as possible from
the roots then using scissors to trim the roots to between 1 and 2 inches.
Care is taken not to damage any basal growths. Stools are then 'boxed up'
in seed trays or commercial ice cream containers.
All stools are then watered and placed in
the cold frame or moved to the greenhouse. When the stools have dried off
they are sprayed with a proprietary fungicide/insecticide.
When all stools are lifted the chrysanth
beds are roughly dug over and lightly limed prior to winter.
